Christina Aguilera Announced As Cybersmiler Of The Month Award Winner For March
It takes a lot of bravery to endure years of abuse based on your physical appearance, to then pose completely makeup free for the cover of a magazine - more of this in the world please! If you are affected by any kind of online abuse, follow the links throughout the article to our various support services.
Christina has been an icon and role model to many young people for what seems like an eternity – rising to fame nearly 20 years ago with massive hit singles such as ‘Genie in a Bottle’ and her powerful self-empowerment anthem ‘Beautiful’. Some people might even remember her from her Disney Channel days, but there has been a darker side to Christina’s career – being a regular target of slut-shaming type abuse and the ongoing criticism of her ‘risqué’ style.
This month, with complete disregard for all the trolls and haters online, the singer made the brave decision to pose completely stripped of all makeup for the front cover of ‘Paper’ magazine. Many people found the photo to be unrecognizable, praising Christina for her natural look.
Just because Christina has sold records and her job is a singer – it doesn’t mean that this step was any less daunting for her than for anybody else choosing to do a makeup-free front cover shoot! Even though Christina has faced terrible levels of bullying and abuse from online critics and the public throughout the years, the songwriter feels optimistic for the future and recognizes how attitudes are changing.
“There’s always gonna be those trolls out there or people that have their own definition and ideals of beauty, but I think we’re progressing to a place of pushback and more people coming out.”
Christina Aguilera, Cybersmiler of the Month
There has been a recent rise in celebrities and influencers posting makeup free images of themselves onto social media, gradually breaking down the social ideals of beauty and acceptance – although there is nothing wrong with wearing makeup either!
By doing this shoot without any makeup, Christina Aguilera has helped encourage self-empowerment and has spread a global message of body positivity. It is worth noting that the article within Paper magazine has also made it clear that people shouldn’t have to take steps like this in order for people to appreciate their beauty or talent – well done Paper magazine!
Christina has done her fair share of empowering others this month, behaving like a true Cybersmiler! Congratulations and thank you Christina – you are an inspiration.
